ECU remap: the go-to option for power

The single most cost-effective way to tune your engine without physical modifications. Looking for extra BHP? No? Perhaps you're more interested in improving your MPG...

From £180

Whichever it may be, an ECU remap may be a viable option for your motor's needs. Remapping a car is essentially teaching it a new way to use its engine. ECU stands for Engine Control Unit, and re-map? You can see where this is going.

Every driver is different. Some have the patience of a sloth with actual manufacturer MPG statistics, whilst others want to crush the throttle pedal, only to be let down by the needle taking its sweet time to reach 60mph. And then there are the few in between who fancy the best of both worlds. Fortunately, that doesn't stop the remap fairy from making your dreams come true.

What can you expect?

Turbocharged cars typically see a 10–30% improvement in BHP and torque, depending on the engine and its condition. Petrol cars aren't left out either; some turbo petrols respond very well. Fuel-saving claims are often exaggerated, so we'll be honest about what's realistic for your car.

Remap stages

  • Economy: smoother torque delivery aimed at efficiency.
  • Stage 1 (stock): the standard revision, considered the safest and most reliable for day-to-day use on factory-spec cars.
  • Stage 2 (modified): a step further, needs supporting modifications.
  • Stage 3 / custom: when that's not enough. Load the parts cannon. Your wallet and mechanic have nowhere to run.

Safety & reliability

It mostly depends on how you drive. The main things to watch are ageing parts, extra strain on components like the turbo and clutch, and fuel economy if you use the extra power. Factory limits exist for a reason, so do your homework: some cars need physical upgrades to handle more power.

Who does the tuning?

AutoECU's focus is programming. Performance remaps are written by our partner tuners, specialists we've vetted and work with directly, and you may be referred to the partner who specialises in your engine. Everything else ECU-related (immobiliser work, DTC solutions, module programming) is handled in-house.

Off-road & motorsport use only. EGR, DPF, AdBlue (SCR), GPF/OPF and other emissions-related software, speed limiter removal, anti-lag, and pops & bangs are supplied strictly for off-road and motorsport vehicles. Removing or disabling emissions equipment on a road vehicle is illegal in the UK (Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986), will fail an MOT and may invalidate your insurance. A signed customer declaration is required before any of this work is carried out, and we do not offer it for road-registered vehicles that will be driven on public roads.

Is my car supported?

Most cars can be remapped, but some newer vehicles (and a handful of older ones) have locked ECUs. Send your reg through the quote form for a compatibility check and the figures your car achieved in testing.
